Thoughts

This is my chance to voice my thoughts about fish and the bigger picture. I am deeply concerned about the state of animal life on our planet. Fish keeping, and in particular, fish breeding is one small way that some of us can preserve a little of the biological diversity of our world. And every little bit of preservation helps. However, we are not doing nearly enough. In fact, overall, we are moving in the wrong direction.

The vast problem we face is the depletion of animal species as we overpopulate the world with human beings.

For example, there is only so much water on the planet. No new water has been created in 3 billion years. It only exists in the forms of water vapor (clouds), freshwater lakes and streams (about one percent), polar ice (two percent), and sea water. It seems infinite, but fresh water certainly isn’t. Water is only one example of our limited resources, but it is a good one because both humans and animals share a need it. If the water supply is constant while the human population expands enormously, we humans edge out everything else that tries to share the water on the planet with us.

Some argue that the world can support still more people. I agree that it probably can, given modern farming techniques, but should it? Sure, we can add more people, but only at the expense of depleting the environment and devastating animal life. We have already caused extinctions and we are continuing to eliminate species at an unprecedented rate. Every time we do, we are the poorer for it.

Animals contribute something remarkable and irreplaceable to human existence.

What can we do? We can address either issue. They are equally important.

> Work toward conservation.

> Support zero population growth.

Speak up, contribute money and volunteer time to support these causes. Take care of the biodiversity that exists and reduce the human population explosion.

Please do what you can.
